Tattoos have always been considered a way of life for many people who are fond of the beauty of body art. Although they can be exciting to get and show off, there are always risks that come with not taking care of one properly. Some infections can be mild while others can lead to death. If you recently got inked and are feeling like your tattoo may be infected but aren't quite sure, read on.

Determine the level of pain you are in. Of course you'll be a bit sore while your tattoo is healing up, but after the time when it should be healed and it's still hurting, it could be mildly infected. The pain can be rather severe if it's infected and also be very tender to being touched.
Pay attention to the warmth of the skin where your tattoo is. Is it hot to the touch? Does it feel like you have a sunburn? This could indicate an infection if the skin is very warm.
Look for redness. Again, your skin will already be red after getting tattooed as it's healing. But if it's gotten a little darker or the redness hasn't died down at all, it could be infected.
See if there is any swelling. Swelling could be considered as the result of fluid accumulation or pus collection in an infected or inflamed site and may indicate a possible infection if it is gradually worsening awhile after you've went to go get your tattoo. Pus discharge from the site of a tattoo can be described as a definite indication of an on site infection.
